The Order of the Secret Monitor

or Brotherhood of David and Jonathan

The first references to this Order are known to be of Dutch origin. It is reported that the Order of David and Jonathan was introduced to the New World around 1658, by Dutch settlers of Jewish descent, who settled in Newport, Rhode Island, USA

Our present Order was then brought from America to Britain, by Doctor Issachar Zachary, in about 1875. Originally it had been worked in America, as just a single degree. However, under the leadership of Doctor Zachary, the Alfred Meadows Conclave was formed, followed by a Grand Council in 1887, and the ritual subsequently extended, when a further two were added, so that today, there are now three degrees, the First or Induction, the Second or Princes, and the Third or Supreme Ruler. The latter of these is only taken when you are installed in the Chair.

In a relaxed atmosphere, amongst friends, you will understand and experience, the importance of fellowship, as depicted by the Brotherhood of David and Jonathan.

Our rituals and ceremonies practice the tenets taught in the three degrees of Craft Masonry, and generate a much deeper understanding of the principle of Brotherly Love.

Members of the Order of the Secret Monitor, are well known for supporting and caring about their Brethren at all levels, from Grand Conclave, right down through the Provinces, to individual Brethren within each Conclave. This is reflected by the appointment of four Visiting Deacons (or Almoners) in each Conclave, who each look after a number of Brethren under their respective "charges”.

The Order is open to all Master Masons in good standing, who are members of a regular Craft Constitution, no further qualifications necessary.

As there is very little regalia required until receiving a Provincial appointment, it therefore has one of the lowest joining costs of any Masonic Order.

Interested? Then may we take this opportunity to invite you to become a member of such a unique and outstanding Order.

By joining one of our Conclaves, you will be coming in to one of the friendliest orders in Freemasonry, as the fellowship exists not just within this Province, but can also be more widely found and experienced in Conclaves throughout England, Wales, Scotland and the Channel Islands, as well as in our many other Districts and Conclaves overseas. It is one of the most visited, and best supported, of all the Companion Orders.

So, why not come and join us.  You can always be assured of a very warm, and friendly welcome, wherever you go.
